The Montague Island penguin colony is thought to be around 32,000 pairs, making it one of the largest in Australia. Every year, thousands of tourists come to Narooma to see them.

Where they sleep

These flightless birds’ nest in burrows and come ashore to feed on small fish in the waters around the island.

At night, they return to their roosting sites to sleep. These sites are usually located close to where they feed, in order to minimize the amount of time spent away from their young.
